Branding? Start with Quality
Judging from most reports, the ICAST show didn’t deliver any big reveals, things that would kickstart the industry like an unbanned umbrella rig. In many ways, it was one complicated mixed message. If anyone in the fishing business has any clue as to its overall direction, then please, give me a look into that crystal ball.
Spro Bronzeye Shad with Dean Rojas + Lake Havasu Tournament
Had a little time to talk with Dean Rojas and his new Spro Bronzeye Shad over @ the 2013 ICAST show in Vegas. Cool Little bait. We also talk about the up-coming Spro Frog Tournament on 7/20/2013 at Lake Havasu.
"Best of Show" Live Target - I Pity the Fool
Just when I thought the world couldn’t get any crazier, here comes the LiveTarget BaitBall. At first, I thought this was a carefully crafted ICAST hoax, something to brighten the spirits of those in Las Vegas. I mean, really, who could look at this “concept” lure, listen to the exaggerated claims and reach the conclusion that, yes, I will spend $16.99 on a clear plastic art project?
P. S. I Love You
A few months ago, I embarked on something of a social experiment. I wondered what would happen if someone finally spoke candidly about the world of fishing. What would be the reaction to unvarnished opinions about the realities of bass fishing and the industry at large? Would those who place themselves in the public eye – in an industry that knows nothing of critical analysis – continue to do and say and promote outrageous things?
Band of Idiots. We few, we stupid few.
We need to apologize to fly fishermen. As bass anglers, we stole their best idea – catch and release – and, in return, gave back nothing. That is, until now when it seems we have given back less than nothing. If Curtis Fleming and Fly Rod Chronicles is any indication of where televised fly fishing is headed, dear fly rodders, I am so, so sorry.
ICAST 2013 Al Lindner vs Johnny Bench
For me, attending ICAST (International Convention of Sporting Trades) was a yearly rite of passage. Back in the day, it was called AFTMA (American Fishing Tackle Manufacturers Association) and it was the place to see new stuff, reconnect with old friends and get a feeling of just where the industry was headed. Not only was it the place where deals were made, but where new companies could make or break their futures. Sadly, it hasn’t been like that for a very long time.
Getting Dairy Queened
There are certain stories you need to mull over a little longer than others. I know the Jared Miller incident at the Jordan Dam is old news to some and, to most, the reaction was the same: He could have easily bought the farm in those rapids for himself and his marshal, Lisa Cox. If you haven’t seen the footage you should.
Fishing Human Shadows w/ Bill Siemantel SAY WHAT!!!!!!
OK, I am going to show you some of the craziest stuff that you have ever seen.. PERIOD! Fishing shadows is one thing but fishing human shadows (your own) within minutes is another. I find a nice point with some stained water and stand still so the fish can postion themselves in my shadow and then I hammer them. Equipment used was a Lamiglas rod, Shimano 2500, Maxima 6# and a 1/8oz Spro Phat fly with a 1" bobber.
What Does a Unicorn and the A-Rig Have in Common?
Well, the votes are in on the PAA umbrella rig survey of its membership. Of 147 respondents, 96 voted against the use of umbrella rigs in PAA events and 51 voted in favor of their use. Now, the final decision rests in the hands of PAA board members.
