JUST JIG IT! For Anything That Swims.

Stan Kaplun

Another quick report from San Diego Bay. I went out the other day on my 10ft aluminum with Kevin Bridge and Eric Remmer. Yes, we did put 3 in the boat and fished pretty comfortably. Communication was definitely key though. We were able to make it work and find some fish that were willing to cooperate. We found the Bonito and Barracuda and got into a great bite, with the larger 3lb model Bonito stealing the show. I was throwing a 1/2 oz Spro Prime Bucktail Jig in dark shad on a Shimano Calcutta 200 with 15 mono on a Shimano Teramar. The retrieve varied from a moderate to fast steady retrieve, to sporadically popping the jig in the mid water column. I ended the day with 5, all on the bucktail. Kevin finished with another 5 on jerk baits, plus a couple solid barracuda. Eric's final numbers were very similar, with a handful of nice Bonito, as well as a handful of nice Cuda'. If you need to get your rod bent for some fast action do not over look this species of fish, they pull hard for their size. Until next time. -Stan Kaplun-
